Our Approach

We do not collect, analyze, or track visitor data. This site exists to publish research, not to monitor readers.

Unavoidable Technical Data

Despite our intent, certain data collection occurs because servers and infrastructure require it:

CDN Services: Cloudflare sits between you and our server, delivering cached content and blocking attacks. When Cloudflare serves a page from its cache (which is most pageviews), our server never sees the request at all. Cloudflare processes this data under its own privacy policy. We do not access or analyze it.

Server Logs: When Cloudflare cannot serve cached content, requests reach our Cloudways hosting server, which automatically logs IP addresses, browser type, access times, and requested pages. This happens at the infrastructure level. We do not access or analyze these logs unless investigating a technical problem or security incident.

In practice: Most visitors interact only with Cloudflare’s cache. Our server sees a small fraction of total traffic.

Data We Actually Use

Email: If you contact dushan@metaethics.org, we have your email address and message content. We use this solely to respond.

Purchases: If you buy something via Shopify, we receive your name, email, shipping address, and transaction details. Shopify handles payment processing—we never see credit card data. We keep purchase records for fulfillment, customer service, and tax compliance. We do not use this data for marketing or analysis.

What We Don’t Do

  • No analytics tracking
  • No cookies (beyond what Cloudflare requires for CDN functionality)
  • No behavioral analysis
  • No marketing automation
  • No data sharing for advertising
  • No social media tracking pixels

Legal Basis

When processing occurs, it’s based on:

  • Technical necessity (site operation)
  • Contractual necessity (purchases, communication)
  • Legal obligations (tax records)

Data Retention

Server logs: Retained according to Cloudways’ infrastructure requirements (we don’t access them)

Email: Kept until resolved, then deleted unless ongoing relevance

Purchase records: Kept for legal/tax compliance periods

Your Rights

Under GDPR you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data we actually hold (primarily: emails you sent, purchase records). Contact dushan@metaethics.org.
